Antique Victorian mourning buckle ring featuring woven hair around the ring. The ring has the hallmark 'SOLID' stamped on the inside of the ring. The ring is set in gilt, a gold tone metal.
Mourning jewellery dates back to the 16th century, it became popular in the Victorian era when Prince Albert passed away when Queen Victoria went into mourning. The most interesting pieces of mourning jewellery include hair work, which was not necessarily from the deceased much of the hair was imported from Europe to keep up with demand. It was used to create a connection between a deceased loved one.
